My research into liver abscesses.
Liver abscesses are increasingly common, occurring in between 12 and 32 percent of feedlot cattle. To put this into perspective, upwards of 10 million head of cattle are being fed at USA feedlots at any given time, meaning that 1.2 to 3.2 million of these animals could have liver abscesses. Even with increasing prevalence, there is limited literature investigating the causes of these infections and prevention strategies outside of fed-antibiotics. My interest in this disease, combined with the industry’s need for solutions, has sparked my doctoral research. My current research is assessing the efficacy of natural supplements for preventing liver abscesses in feedlot cattle.
